Minimalism and mysticism

Martynov's Magnificat dedicated to David James and Tatjana Grindenko

Vladimir Martynov, church music teacher in the Sergei Pasade monastery in Zagorsk, who is far away from the conventional musical structures, is atypical in the modern musical panorama. He is the only Russian composer to research into minimalism, which combines not only technical composition but also a philosophical concept: "the minimal structures encompass the essence of being, this mystical aspect is essential for minimalist music to get over the technicality that American composers, before they approached minimalism, could not get over ", the composer tells us. The world premier of his Partita No.l for violin, published by Sikorsky, was played by Gidon Kremer. Vladimir Martynov concentrates his production on choral church music and music for percussion instruments. His recovery, decrypting and interpretation of antique texts started the renaissance of the orthodox musical lithurgy in the 80's in the ex-Soviet Union, the priceless patrimony of a millennium of history of the Orthodox Church was brought to the attention of the world by the concerts and recordings of the Moscow Orthodox Partriarchate Male Choir.
Martynov is known in the West for his numerous compositions for percussion instruments, presented by the Mark Pekarsky Percussion Ensemble in the main European festivals (Wiener Modern, Festival of Monaco, Helsinki Festival, the Basel Festival). "He is the composer for percussion" says Mark Pekarsky " of all the artistes who have dedicated their work to us (over one hundred compositions have been written specially for Mark Pekarsky), Martynov emerges for the depth of research he has carried out on our instruments you have to look for the total involvement that his music often elicits in the personality and behaviour of the artist".
Some of the most important works by Martynov are the Requiem for Choir and Strings, the Apocalypse based on St. John's Apocalypse, a composition published by Schott, for over a hundred singers and the Daily Routine for Percussion instruments.
In 1993 Martynov wrote the Magnificat on the Fifth note/tone?? for counter tenor and strings: the work commissioned by the Itaca association for the fifth edition of Musicarte the International Festival of Early Music in Bajo Dora, Piemont Italy. The world premier of the Magnificat took place in Ivrea and was transmitted by RAI the Italian Radio. It was replicated at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan in 1995, at Gidon Kremer's Lockenhaus Festival in 1996 and on numerous Italian tours.
