WHAT IS THE NOISE OF TIME ?

The Noise of Time is a five piece-group formed in Prague/Cz, but now permanently based in St.Petersburg/Russia, by British drummer, percussionist & composer Marcus Godwyn which aims to give musicians the chance to explore and express as wide a variety of moods, aspects and disciplines as possible, all under one roof, so to speak.{I have become increasingly frustrated with the creeping compartmentalisation of popular music over the last couple of decades. My dream is that our performances will be, somehow ALL ENCOMPASSING}. Everyone and anyone is welcome to partake in this experiment with us and doubtless everyone will have their own opinion as to just how close or not we have come to succeeding. As well as performing in the traditional concert format we are also looking forward to collaborating with; film makers, dancers, theatres, performance artists, wine connoisseurs, sushi chefs and people who understand that the urban transport of the future IS the horse!

WHY ARE WE CALLED THE NOISE OF TIME ?

The Noise of Time is the most commonly accepted English translation of the Russian title, Shoom Vreminy. A short, auto-biographical prose collection of memoires and impressions of the childhood and youth of the Russian poet Osip Mandelstam in and around turn of the last century St. Petersburg. It was the memoires of his wife, Nadezhda Mandelstam (nee Khazina) that enabled me to understand and connect with my own artistic direction and helped me to find my way out of, what was ,for me at any rate, the artistic desert of Britain in the mid nineteen eighties. The second volume especially,Hope Abandoned, is the most ALL ENCOMPASSING testament of twentieth century experience that I know. Not to mention the fact that I like this title in English as well as Russian. {Generally speaking the sense of shoom implies more of a sustained and uniform auditory effect than the English word noise.[Clarence Brown]} Hubbub, tumult ,comotion, clamour are all possible translations.

THE NOISE OF TIME MISSION STATEMENT !

We will play strict compositions like a classical ensemble. We will play looser compositions with room for solos and improvisation ,a la ,jazz and certain forms of rock.{Our music will be neither jazz nor rock and will certainly not be jazz-rock}.We will also play free improvisation. All three of these musical possibilities should combine to form a homogenious whole for each and every NOISE OF TIME performance and recording. We will maintain flexibility as some situations or moments in time may call for a pushing to prominance of one or another of these aspects or components.
Whatever the situation we will find ourselves in we will always strive to remain open to that state of receptivity to inspiration that comes from beyond ego and ideas.
Our number one enemy must be mediocrity in all its forms. We will avoid cliches at all costs. We will shun all superficial trends and fashions, while at the same time sensing, responding to and interacting with the TRUE spirit of the times. We will consider it our duty to remain at ,the cutting edge, of our enviroment and what is going on.
Equally we will avoid all forms of elitism and cliqueism. We must believe that the work we will collectively undertake is for all people who may derive something from it. We must refuse any notion that we are too interlectual or, somehow, above the heads of the general public.
The music we will play should be:- Funny, lighthearted, insouciant and yet very serious, deeply rooted from within ourselves and impossible to ignore. It should be meticulously planned and constructed and yet explosively spontaneous and free.{A freedom that can only be attained through discipline}. It should be joyfully intense yet sad, very forcefull yet vunerable, exposed, and of course genuinely individual. Our music should seem to people as if it had always been there, but should never cease to be suprising, even disconcerting.Hence,it will help each and every player, listener, concert organiser, etc to discover something about themselves.
